Mid-July 2021 Update
Prototype In Progress
I’m halfway into the second month now working on the game and things are going great. Right now my main goal is to make the initial prototype of the game before diving into full production.
At this point I have the first pass of all the major systems and the initial character/weapon art and animation. I am currently working on the baseline audio work now.
For anyone that has missed it, it’s an open world horror(ish) game using Unreal Engine 5. I’ll be saying more specifically what that means a bit later. :)
Why a Solo Game?
A lot of people ask me why I’m doing a solo game. It’s obviously not the easiest way to make a game. So here’s some thoughts about that:
One of the biggest reasons is that I think it’s more possible than ever. Tools are drastically better than they were even ten years ago.
For example, having things like Houdini for guiding procedural landscape generation and placement of assets to build a world. Building a large world is 100% possible if you’re not just doing it with brute force by hand.
There is also the power of Unreal Engine 5 combined with its integration of MegaScans that means I don’t have to build a lot of things myself (rocks, stumps, etc.)
Blender, VR sculpting and other programs are also a lot better than previous methods of content generation.
All of those things combine to make it possible for one person to do the work of many people. This changes everything.
Lastly, I think it’s just a great way to learn a lot of things. A lot of time in AAA can be spent not actually making the game and instead going to meetings and trying to improve the engine/tools. With a solo game I can primarily focus on what I really care about, making great games.
